The sculptural portrait of Barbara Mez-Starck will be made of laboratory-synthesized limestone. The choice of material will refer both to her scientific legacy in chemistry and to her private life and Jewish heritage. Produced from atmospheric CO₂ using biomimetic carbon capture technology, the material will challenge the historical perception of stone as a “pure” and “noble” medium. Due to its sensitivity to environmental conditions, the sculpture will be protected by a glass cube, evoking the hermetic nature of laboratory work. The lowered position of the portrait will allude to the difficult periods of the scientist’s life during National Socialism. Lange E is a performative sculpture. The object on the pedestal is shaped by pressing a template through a soft mass of uncured concrete, creating an elongated projection of the letter E and a residual mass at the other end of the template. The artwork invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between form, material, and the artistic process.
